The Good Way

The Good Way

Jeremiah 6:16 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.

Have you ever been on a journey in a car with someone who won’t ever stop to ask directions and won’t look at a map? Everyone else in the car suspects they’re going the wrong way, and as time goes by they not only suspect, but they know they’ve gone the wrong way! But will this driver admit they’ve made a mistake? No way. They would rather drive for an extra hour and a half to get somewhere rather than admit they need help by stopping and asking someone for directions.

This is a little bit like the people described by the prophet Jeremiah in Jeremiah 6 verse 16. The people of Israel had wandered away from God and as time went by they were only getting further and further away from God. Instead of following God’s path and God’s way they had invented their own path and wanted to go their own way. Jeremiah is offering them the way of safety. He’s telling them where the good path is. He’s telling them how to find it, and that when they find it they need to walk in it so that they will no longer go astray.

Jeremiah tells them they need to ask for the old paths, and it’s the same for us. We need to ask for the Old Book, for God’s Book. We need to turn back to God’s Word and walk in its ways.
