Luke 1:66 And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
The events surrounding the birth of John the Baptist and also of the Lord Jesus were prophesied in Scripture many hundreds of years in advance. This helps us to convince us about the truth of Scripture because everything which was foretold in Scripture about the Messiah came true exactly as it was given.
It's interesting that the announcement about the coming of John the Baptist was not in the busy city of Jerusalem but in the hill country of Judea. This shows us that God's ways are not man's ways. If we wanted to make a big impact and be noticed we would choose the biggest stage in the biggest city! However God chooses the humble surroundings of the hill country of Judea to announce this amazing news. Part of the reason for this is that this area has special significance in Scripture. The hill country of Judea was the location of the ancient city of Hebron. This is where Abraham and Sarah had lived (Genesis 13:18). It's the place that was given to Caleb as a reward for being faithful to the Lord (Joshua 15:13). It's also the location of where David had been King for seven years before he was King in Jerusalem (2 Samuel 15:13).
The events surrounding the coming of Jesus Christ did not just happen! They were prophesied in Scripture many hundreds of years in advance. This could not have happened except for the hand of God. In this way God has put His stamp on the Lord Jesus that He is the true Messiah which was to come into our world.
