Psalm 119:114 Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.
When enemies advance against us we need to hide from their attacks and be shielded from their weapons. In this life we have three main enemies : the world, the flesh and the devil. Each of these advance against us and go to war with us such that they attempt to take us away from following God's will and God's ways. These three enemies of our soul are constantly at war with us and would easily overthrow us if not for the grace and mercy of God. Our own strength is little help against such fierce and terrible enemies. We need to go to the One who is "higher than I" (Psalm 61:2).
As these enemies advance against us we can say with confidence that the Lord is our hiding place and our shield in the day of battle. He is always the strength and protection of His people and so it is to Him that we must go for help. The sanctuary of God is the hiding place of His people and the shield of faith is a sure defence against all the enemies of God and His people.
The Lord Jesus Christ is a strong tower of defence so high that neither the world, the flesh or devils are able to scale those high walls. These walls reach up to heaven and those who are within those walls by faith are safe for ever more. We know that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. As we place our confidence and hope in God's everlasting Word we
will not be disappointed.
While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyes shall close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.
